THE END OF AN ERA 1899-2005

Highfield Road

HIGHFIELD ROAD -THE END OF AN ERA

The bulldozers have moved in to Hillfields to demolish the famous Coventry City Football ground at Highfield Road and two stands and a few large mounds of earth are all that currently remain on the site where the Sky Blue’s played over a century of football.

Following the last game at the site where City victoriously beat Derby 6-2 in April last year; the Championship side moved out of Hillfields, to their new home at the £113million Ricoh Arena in Rowley’s Green.  Over the past few months Hillfielders have witnessed a steady flow of fans taking photos of the old ground before and during its demolition and grown men have been spotted getting visibly emotional as they remember the site’s trials (such as the 1987 cup run that bought the FA silver ware home to Hillfields) and tribulations (like the relegation battles that eventually led to the team slipping from the Premiership).

Developers George Wimpy are now building a selection of houses and flats on the site which should look something like those currently being built on the other side of the road where the old football ground car park and Mercers Arms once stood.  They are employing 75 workers to build the housing development, which will provide a total of 337 homes comprising of one-bedroom to four-bedroom apartments, terraced and semi-detached houses, ranging from two to four storeys; a grassy area as well as featuring a public square with a piece of art inspired by the Sky Blues.

Hillfields News and Views would like to take this opportunity to welcome all the new residents of this development to Hillfields and wish them many happy years in the area

Ever wanted to become a professional footballer? How would you like to win a trial with the Sky Blues Academy? Well - this could be the kick-start your footballing career needs!

Coventry City’s first ever ‘Street Feet’ competition gives JSBs the chance to show off their flicks and tricks under the watchful eyes of Academy Managers Gregor Rioch and Richard Stevens.

Entrants will be selected at random to take the centre-circle in rounds that will take place at half time at City’s remaining home games. You will have just 30 seconds to impress the judges and book yourself a place in the final on April 12, 2008 at the Sky Blues penultimate home game against Stoke City.

The ultimate winner will get a free JSB membership for the 08/09 season and will have a one day trial, training with the Sky Blues stars of the future. So…get practicing those ‘heel-flicks’ and ‘round the worlds’ because it could be you on the pitch!

SO HOW DO YOU ENTER??

It’s simple to enter but you MUST be a JSB member! Don’t worry if you are not already a member…you can sign up now and still take part. Simply call the ticket office on 0870 421 1987 (option 1) and be sure to make a note of your JSB membership number once you’re signed up!

Once you’ve done that, simply go to the JSB section of www.ccfc.co.uk, fill out the application form and return to Street Feet, JSB Office, CCFC, Ricoh Arena, Phoenix Way, Coventry, CV6 6GE or email Streetfeet@ccfc.co.uk.
