THE END OF AN ERA 1899-2005

Highfield Road

HIGHFIELD ROAD -THE END OF AN ERA

The bulldozers have moved in to Hillfields to demolish the famous Coventry City Football ground at Highfield Road and two stands and a few large mounds of earth are all that currently remain on the site where the Sky Blue’s played over a century of football.

Following the last game at the site where City victoriously beat Derby 6-2 in April last year; the Championship side moved out of Hillfields, to their new home at the £113million Ricoh Arena in Rowley’s Green.  Over the past few months Hillfielders have witnessed a steady flow of fans taking photos of the old ground before and during its demolition and grown men have been spotted getting visibly emotional as they remember the site’s trials (such as the 1987 cup run that bought the FA silver ware home to Hillfields) and tribulations (like the relegation battles that eventually led to the team slipping from the Premiership).

Developers George Wimpy are now building a selection of houses and flats on the site which should look something like those currently being built on the other side of the road where the old football ground car park and Mercers Arms once stood.  They are employing 75 workers to build the housing development, which will provide a total of 337 homes comprising of one-bedroom to four-bedroom apartments, terraced and semi-detached houses, ranging from two to four storeys; a grassy area as well as featuring a public square with a piece of art inspired by the Sky Blues.

Hillfields News and Views would like to take this opportunity to welcome all the new residents of this development to Hillfields and wish them many happy years in the area
