John's 35-year passion for scouting
By Staff Copy
Scouting veteran
John Evett has been presented with an award for his services to town cubs and scouts over the years.
Mr Evett was
a scout himself and has served the area for many years. He became an assistant scout leader in March 1972 and then became
scout leader in the area. Working his way up, he held a warrant as assistant District Commissioner for the Scouts from
1975 to 1977. From 1977 to 1993 he was the group scout leader of Waverley and then from 1994 to 1997 he became the assistant District Commissioner for Cub
Scouts in Kenilworth. No stranger to awards, Mr Evett has been presented with two long
service awards as well as the Chief Scout’s Commendation for Good Service, which he received in June 1989. He officially
retired from Scouting at the age of 65 in 1997 in accordance with the age limit rules which were in place at the time. However,
Cub leaders were quick to accept an offer from him to continue organising Cub Scout football and he did that come rain and
shine for a number of years. To say thank you, Mr Evett was presented with an award by the town mayor Coun Spencer Harrison
at the Lions Show on Saturday. Lesley Plant, one of the organisers of the presentation, said: “This is our way to
say thank you to John for all his hard work in scouting over the years, but especially for keeping our cub football activities
going, always properly managed and always encouraging the real Scouting ethics of fun and participation. “We hope
our small gift will be a happy reminder of many great occasions and most of all how much John’s support has been appreciated.”

Estate agents are getting on their
bikes
By Sundari Sankar
Traffic diversions
and warmer weather have encouraged a team of Kenilworth estate agents to get on their bikes.
Owner of Newey
Property in Warwick Road, Michael Barnwell, spurred
on his co-workers to dust off their helmets and cycle to cut down on travelling times to appointments and viewings, since
part of the road closed last month. He said: “We are all very supportive of the new developments in Kenilworth and
are very much looking forward to the benefits the regeneration will bring - but we found that travelling to appointments by
car was becoming very time consuming. “I like to keep fit anyway, so it made perfect sense for me and all the employees
who could to use their bikes for work. We are finding that we can get to appointments on time and with a lot less stress.
Our customers like it as they appreciate that we are doing our bit for the environment. “Now that it’s summer,
the weather isn’t an issue, I’m not stuck in a car for much of the day, I’m getting regular exercise - climbing
those hills around Knowle Hill is good exercise, let me tell you - and we are providing a faster service to our tenants and
landlords. Everyone’s a winner.”

Dore will not refund money to
patients
By Staff Copy
Patients who
have shelled out thousands of pounds on the Dore programme have been told not to expect a penny of their cash back.
Families and
individuals in the area and across the rest of the UK have been sent letters from administrators Kroll stating that ‘due
to the company’s ‘financial position, refunds are not possible’. Those who have paid by credit card might
be able to claw some of the money back, but for the customers who used debit cards or cash, it may have been lost. In some
cases up to £2,000 has been paid up front. Some of the Dore treatment programmes cost up to £2,500. One parent, Mr Turner,
who does not wish to be fully identified, said he was ‘sad and angry’ that the centre had closed down. He said
that his nine-year-old son was six months into the programme and was pleased with his progress. But the family has paid
out more than £2,000 up front for the course and fear they won’t see any of it back. He also says he knows he is not
the only one that this has happened to. Another parent, who did not wish to be named, said her child was undergoing treatment
at the centre and said she had borrowed the money to pay for the course. Staff wages have also been left unpaid, with 100
employees losing their jobs following the announcement in May. Many are still awaiting payment and money owing is reaching
thousands. All 13 Dore centres in the UK, including the company’s flagship base in Kenilworth,
were closed at the end of May due to financial issues. The centre provided support and treatment for people with learning
difficulties. It was first set up in 2000 by Hampton Lucy businessman Wynford Dore who had been inspired by his severely
dyslexic daughter, Susie. The multi-million pound businessman thought of the idea after Susie tried to take her own life
after her diagnosis. One in six people have the condition and Mr Dore, working with professors and eminent researchers
around the globe, funded a medical team to come up with a cure for dyslexia and other learning difficulties. It claimed
to have helped thousands of people worldwide to cope with such difficulties. Over the last three years Dore had treated
more than 10,000 people in the UK and helped patients in America, Australia and Hong
Kong. As well as Kenilworth, it had centres in Bromley, Wembley, Bedford, Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Holborn, Kingston-upon-Thames, Langport in Somerset, Manchester,
Sheffield and Southampton. At present no one is willing to comment and the administrators
have stated they are currently in the process of finding a new buyer. Have you been affected by the closures at Dore? Contact

Schools work hard to put their
green travel plans into action
By Staff Copy
Tackling congestion
and thinking about more sustainable ways to travel is high on the list of priorities for schools in Kenilworth.
Armed with county
council grants to help with plans, most town schools have already produced a School Travel Plan and committed themselves to
looking into more environmentally friendly ways of travelling to and from school. St
John’s Primary School, Nursery and Children’s
Centre is just one of them. The school has already written a travel plan and plans to spend the grant on a ‘parent waiting
shelter’ erected on the school site to provide cover for parents who have walked to school to collect their children. Headteacher,
Jan Hamilton said: “Our year six pupils, as part of their design and technology work, designed shelters and came up
with some very good ideas which were incorporated into the final design. Our travel plan has helped us towards our work in
achieving National Healthy
School status.” Priors
Field Primary School submitted
its travel plan earlier this year. They are involved in a number of schemes including the recent Walk to School Week. The
school has also signed up to the county council’s Trophy Scheme that rewards the class that have made the most effort
to travel sustainably, this could be walking, cycling, car sharing or even by scooter. The school has also been involved with
the Kerbsafe team and has been been awarded Healthy Schools status St Augustine’s Catholic Primary School has also
been working hard to tackle issues. Angela Scull, headteacher said: “The travel plan has really helped us to focus our
attention on what needs to be done to help with developing our children into healthier young people. They are now very aware
of all the issues around parking and crossing the road safely. It will also help us to ensure that children are increasingly
becoming more active in their walking/ cycling to school.” Clinton
Primary School is keen to encourage more children to cycle to school
and already offer the pupils the opportunity to take part in cycle training and intend to spend their grant on extending their
bike shed. The school also regularly takes part in Walk to School Week. Headteacher Jane Bates said: “Clinton works closely with its parents and pupils to support a range of initiatives, including
Kerbsafe and cycling awareness. “ Kenilworth School has had a travel plan in place since 2004. The school encourages many students
to travel to and from school by bus and used their grant funding obtained through the travel plan to improve the upper school
entrance. Other schools including St Nicholas Primary School and Park
Hill Junior School
are just starting with their School Travel Plan but have already made progress in encouraging sustainable forms of travel. Hannah
Collett, sustainable travel officer added: “The schools in Kenilworth have worked really
hard on their travel plans and implementing a number of measures to help tackle the problem that traffic generates. “I
have been really pleased with the schools commitment and effort.”

ASK In a few words According to the 2001 census the population of Kenilworth is over 23,000. This is significantly more than it was
in January 1965 when our old station closed. The line between Coventry and Leamington Spa runs through the middle of town and is used today by Virgin Trains and various freight
companies.
Rebuilding Kenilworth station was proposed in the late 90’s and the Local Transport Plan target was to do this by September
2002. For a variety of reasons the project has slipped. The main problem at the moment is the capacity of the line.
The rail industry are planning various schemes to relieve this network bottleneck but at the moment none of the proposals
include running a service to Kenilworth.
This is despite full support from the local authorities and a large
majority of opinion in town.
ASK is a campaign for a rebuilding the railway station
in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, UK.
ASK What?
We are campaigning for a railway station in Kenilworth and the train service our town deserves.
ASK Why?
So that the citizens of Kenilworth can benefit from a mode of transport that otherwise serves only to cut the town in two.
ASK How?
In a positive manner we will make sure the opinions of those in favour of the station are given
their due weight in the planning process.
