The following is an article which appeared in Preston North
End’s matchday programme when we played them at Deepdale 14/03/09. It is written by CCFC Kenilworth Supporter’s
chairman, Jim Arnold. The article was written 1 week after we had been knocked out of the FA Cup by Chelsea, and had lost
at Bristol City on the Tuesday. WORK IN PROGRESS
Relegated to the Championship the season after PNE (Preston North End) were promoted, Coventry City are third
(after PNE and Burnley) in the list of longest serving Championship Clubs. But things are looking up in the East Midlands and Jim Arnold, chairman of the Coventry City Kenilworth Supporters
Club, thinks that following a season of consolidation it will be next year that a concerted push for a Play-Off spot can be
achieved. “It is frustrating, some of the fans are
impatient after losing a couple of games and complain on the radio, But we have to look at the bigger picture. It’s
going to take time and hopefully we’ll do a bit better next season”. Coventry have been busy with FA Cup commitments this year and although they emulated PNE’s
performance in losing to a big four side 2-0, he recognises that it has brought attention to a Club that is on the up again. “It was quite exciting to be in the quarter finals, but Chelsea were
too strong and we were missing a couple of players which didn’t help. They deserved to win and were too strong for us. “I think a lot of people were impressed with the Ricoh Arena on Saturday
because they saw it for the first time and it was full. “A
lot of people miss the old ground, but when the ground is full there is a lot of atmosphere, but obviously if it’s half
empty it makes a difference, people will always miss Highfield Road Road though I suppose”. A work in progress seems to be the dominating thought from the Sky Blue supporter and he also had
kind words for the management team who have managed to turn round a club that was almost set for administration. “I’m impressed with the chairman and manager Chris Coleman. They
have done a good job. It’s a work in progress at the moment and if we can add two or three good players to the ones
we’ve got I think we could push for a top six place next season”. The Ricoh Arena is certainly the place to be to watch good young talent with highly-rated youngsters Kieren
Westwood and Aron Gunnarsson the pick of an attractive side. Arnold admitted that the young side has shown inexperience at
times this campaign, but told the matchday programme that the omens are good for the future. “It’s a young side, we want to go up with them so none of the big clubs come in for them
and one or two are impressing at the moment like Gunnarsson and Westwood. Summing up his side’s season, the fans’ boss thinks that it has hit it’s peaks but that
consistency has been a problem, something injuries and the FA Cup run haven’t helped. “I think it has been about average, we’ve bought some good players, but we’ve still
got a long way to go yet. “The league is our priority,
we’re too late for the Play-Offs this season, but hopefully we can sign two or three good players to go with the one’s
we’ve bought and make a push next season. I think PNE are doing well so we want to get up to that sort of position. “I think we played well against Wolves and Birmingham home and away,
we were unlucky at Wolves, where we lost, and we have had one or two decisions that have gone against us this season in important
games. “They say the decisions even up over a season,
but they’ve gone against us in a few games. Generally I think we will end up mid-table hopefully in the top half though. “We have been inconsistent, we had a bad run with loads of injuries just
after Christmas, when there was a bug going round the camp which meant a lot of players were off sick, And at one point we
only had two fit defenders!”. Alan Irvine can empathise
with that statement considering the number of bodies in his treatment room at different stages this season and the gaffer
may be encouraged by Arnold’s expectations for today’s game. “I’m not expecting much today to be honest and I think the players have been tired after the FA
Cup run and recent games. We’ve never done any good at Bristol, and we lost there, or Preston so if we get a point we
will have done well today. “We won 4-1 a few years
ago at the Ricoh Arena, it was an outstanding performance under Eric Black and one of the best games since we’ve been
down. But Preston have always had the edge at Deepdale and you normally win”.

5000 Day
We had a great day at the Ricoh when Coventry City thank us for taking
5,000 fans

CCFC Kenilworth Supporters have reached a major milestone in their history as they have now taken
over 5,000 Kenilworth fans to see their
beloved team play at the Ricoh Arena. The club were pleased to recognise this with the presentation of a commemorative certificate
by “Kenilworth Kid” Tim Flowers prior to the home game against Barnsley.
The group formed in 2005, when the Club relocated from Highfield Road to the Ricoh Arena
- the purpose being to offer a simple and cost-effective way for Kenilworth based supporters to the Sky Blues.
Right from the first game at The Arena, they have organised Coach travel for each home game, and some away games, also supporting
local schools by assisting with getting the next generation of Sky Blue Fans “on the right road” with coaches.
Those who travel range from young to old, and from solo to family groups, all are welcomed.
Chairman Jim Arnold was the initial driving force behind the idea, and has been joined by Committee
members Harry Bragginton, Dave and Nigel Smith and Jim Seaton. Coaches leave from Abbey End and “The Tiltyard”
Pub in Leyes Lane for every home game and can be booked online at the website www.ccfc-kenilworth-supporters.co.uk or by phone to Dave or Nigel on (01926) 855977.
The Committee would particularly like to thank Catterall’s of Southam, who have provided
great flexibility on numbers and sizes of coaches required, and The Tiltyard Pub, who not only are one of their start/drop-off
points, but who also provide the venue for the regular Monday 7.00pm Meetings (all welcome). Both have been instrumental in
helping reach this fantastic achievement.
Written by Jim Seaton

I am sure you would all like to join me on thanking Jim Seaton for sorting out the great day, which
was enjoyed by us all.
I know Jim put a lot of time and effort (and worried a lot) to make it happen, and it turned out
to be a great day for CCFC Kenilworth Supporters
Cheers Jim top job

The committee (above) would like to thank all that
have used the coach to get to the Ricoh, it is all of you that have made it possible to reach this milestone.

Brick in the wall CCFC Kenilworth Supporters
|
|
|
To mark the great start of CCFC Kenilworth Supporters last season we
have had a brick put in the Wall of Fame. It is fitting that we are in the wall of fame as we started up the same season as
the Ricoh Arena and after last season support we can only go on for seasons to come.

"oh!
what fun it is to see The City win away…" (Jingle Bells etc.) Anyone who has been to an away game will tell you it’s a special atmosphere,
but it’s got increasingly difficult and expensive to attend. The official coaches leave from The Ricoh, so there’s
an additional problem in getting there (and home again!). An
alternative that CCFC Kenilworth Supporters may not have considered is "letting the train take the strain" –
if the right tickets are bought, it can be quite cheap (as an example, I’ve just got my return tickets to Sheffield
for the game against Wednesday for £14.50). It’s also quite convenient as the X17, 16 and 12 buses link Kenilworth
with the key stations at Coventry, Leamington and Warwick. As
an example, I’ve "zoned" likely areas we’ll be playing against with a summary of the likely best options
– some of the games have come and gone already this season, but there’s always next year, and of course, the FA
Cup.
Local (WM) Teams For any teams in the old WM County, Centro do a fantastic value ticket that covers all trains, buses
and the tram in the area for a day – for example this will get you from Coventry Station to Wolverhampton, West Brom
etc. for £4.90 £3.10 for children). It’s even better value if you’re travelling as a family when you
can get a Family Ticket equivalent costing only £8.10 and covering up to two adults and four children. It’s a
"walk up" ticket – so you just turn up at Cov. Station and ask.
2) London Teams Probably the best way to cover these is by travelling by Chiltern on a "Groupsave".
3 or 4 people can travel together for the price of 2. Getting a Groupsave Travelcard means all onward travel in the "Transport
for London" Zones is covered – for 4 people travelling together, this amounts to £14.75 per person, and will
get you to Charlton, QPR and Palace. Some lower fares are available as advance tickets - £5 each way is the best I’ve
found, but then the onward travel’s on top so it becomes questionable.
3) Further afield This is where it starts to get a bit tricky. The best advice is to book early,
and to do it directly though the Train Operators websites (sometimes they keep the better deals to themselves, and there’s
no surcharges, postage etc. levied). The majority of teams we’ll be interested in will be served by either Cross Country
or Virgin. A "top tip" with both of these if the tickets all look expensive is to try again searching from Birmingham
New Street as the start point – a bit like the BBC, they have a strong bias towards Brum and allocate far more cheap
tickets from there – of course, you then have to add the fare from Cov or Leamington to Brum (around a fiver).
What else?Your committee have always said that they’d like to see CCFC Kenilworth Supporters develop into more than
just a Coach Club, so we’d be interested to hear if members are in going to away games by train together – if
there’s sufficient interest, then it may be that we can become a bit of a "Marriage Bureau" – matching
people to groups that get the best deal. We could also just advise on what and when the best deals are for upcoming games.
It’s all a bit "suck it and see" at present and depends on your interest. In the meantime, the following websites
may be of assistance:- Chiltern Railways - http://www.chilternrailways.co.uk/
- operates from Warwick and Leamington to London Marylebone Cross-Country
- http://www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk/ - operates from Coventry and Leamington to Reading, Southampton, Derby, Sheffield,
and via Birmingham New Street to Plymouth, Bristol and other destinations London Midland - http://www.londonmidland.com/index.php/cms/pages/home
- Operates from Leamington and Warwick to Birmingham Moore St/Snow Hill, and on to "The Hawthorns". Also the local
services from Coventry to Birmingham area and beyond (including as far afield as Liverpool) Transport for London - http://www.tfl.gov.uk/ Gives all details for the Transport for London
network, including journey planning Centro "Daytripper"
Details - http://www.networkwestmidlands.com/TicketSales/New%20ticket/dt.htm Virgin West Coast - http://www.virgintrains.co.uk/default.aspx operates from Coventry to Birmingham,
Manchester and the North West And finally (this
came from the CCFC website) – The Transport Direct Journey Planner – it’s really good and will detail walking,
bus and train routes, as well as providing mapping for car journeys - http://www.transportdirect.info/Web2/Home.aspx?cacheparam=5&repeatingloop=Y Severn Valley Railway - http://www.svr.co.uk/ - only joking! Jim Seaton

report from the kenilworth weekly news Web site by Gemma LYNN
1,000 travel from Kenilworth to see Coventry
City
More than 1,000 football fans from Kenilworth have been able to see their beloved heroes in action thanks to
a new club.
CCFC Kenilworth Supporters formed in August 2005 as a means of getting Coventry City fans to the Ricoh Arena by coach for all the home games. It
was established by Jim Arnold who said: "There were coaches laid on in Coventry, Bedworth and Nuneaton but there was nothing round here. So we got in touch with some
coach firms and put adverts in shop windows.
"It has come a long way since it started. We have taken at least one coach to each of the home games, with over 1,000
fans already and we have 60 members. With the help of CCFC and coach sponsors we have taken three kids coaches to games,
some of which have never been to a game before. We have also become a member of the Sky Blue Trust who help us at the beginning
and are a great support." Coaches, which are not just restricted to members, go from Abbey End car park and the Tiltyard
in Leyes Lane an hour and a half before kick off, getting back to Kenilworth an hour after the game. Club member Harry Braggington said their main aim is to get children
to the Ricoh Arena. He said: "It is important to get the kids up there and to get the local kids to support their local
team because they are the future of Coventry City Football Club." They put on coaches for schools in Kenilworth and surrounding areas but need sponsors to fund the scheme. In October, CCFC Kenilworth Supporters
Club ran a coach for children from Park Hill Primary School to Coventry
City's match against Crystal Palace. The coach was sponsored by Paul Elkin on behalf of Provex Solutions,
in association with Coventry City,
who provided free tickets for the children. Member Nigel Smith said: "The coach operated by Catteralls left Kenilworth full of excited children and 5 of their teachers, most of which were visiting the Ricoh Arena For
the first time. During the match the children joined in with the chanting of the Sky Blue supporters, and indulged themselves
with a mini version of the Mexican Wave. All of the children enjoyed the atmosphere at the Arena and had a very enjoyable
afternoon, despite the result, Coventry losing 1-4." Members of the club hope to expand this to other
schools next season. Following a lot of interest from supporters outside the town they are also hoping to get a coach going
from Leamington and Warwick in the near future. The next home game is against Leicester City this weekend. Places on the coach must be booked in advance by
calling Jim Arnold on 748507 For further information about the club visit the website www.ccfc-kenilworth-supporters.co.uk
or meet the members any Monday after 7pm in the Tiltyard.
