2007/8 Season – more ups and downs than The Grand Old Duke of York! – a look back at the season

At the end of most seasons, it’s difficult to remember all the highs and lows, but this season has been more of a challenge in this respect than most!

Back in August, City had just completed a relatively good pre-season, and entered into the Championship full pelt – after six games, we were still undefeated, and clear at the top of the table by a point from Watford. We were still in “the last stages” of negotiations with the US consortium that were to be our “dream ticket” and all looked rosy. The negotiations dragged on past the end of the first transfer window, and Iain Dowie (remember him?) started to grumble about the inability to “freshen up” the squad. However, the existing squad continued to “do the business” if a bit more sporadically – spectacular success came in the cup against Man Utd at Old Trafford – over 74,000 seeing us take the game 2-0. However, league form started to slump, and slowly but surely we dropped down the table. The Americans eventually pulled out of their bid and our desperation to find a buyer to sort the club’s debt problem got ever more urgent. Eventually, having twice posted a “drop dead” time for going into receivership, Ray Ranson and SISU came to the rescue – even this was not clear cut, and the inability to get the amount of shareholder backing that they sought meant another transfer deadline came and went…..we did however lose strikers Dele Adebola and Kevin Kyle to Championship opposition, with no replacements lined up, Leon Best requesting a transfer away, and Leon Mc Kenzie out for the season. Form continued to drop off alarmingly, and we dropped to the point where we are still not mathematically certain that we won’t be in the dreaded bottom three. January saw some cheer with a magnificent away win at Blackburn in the FA Cup, soon countered by an embarrassing home defeat against “The Baggies”. Ray Ranson decided to part company with Iain Dowie and his management team over “different views on how the team should progress” and in came Chris Coleman.

It’s difficult to judge how good the new management on and off the pitch will fare next year as their hands have been tied by missing the boat with transfers and an obvious concentration on sorting the business side of things (including our club having a share in the Ricoh Arena and it’s incomes). It’ll be a very interesting close season……

As the club started well and things got worse, CCFC Kenilworth Supporters had a bad start and things got better. We ran coaches to all the home games, but the second one, to the friendly against Udinese left us stranded at the Ricoh for a while due to a broken down coach, followed not long after at the Bristol game, breaking down on the way back! – as ever, you all remained patient until things were resolved – much appreciated by all of us. Furthermore, Kenilworth Supporters have stayed amazingly loyal despite the disappointments on the pitch. 26th January (Millwall in the FA Cup) saw us pass a remarkable milestone as we celebrated having taken 5,000 to games since the Ricoh opened its doors. Jim Seaton had just joined the Committee with responsibility for PR, and was given the job of arranging something suitable to mark the occasion. Consequently, prior to the home game against Barnsley, we were invited “pitchside” for a presentation of recognition by local boy (and then Assistant manager) Tim Flowers – thrashing Barnsley 4-0 really made it a day to remember. Unfortunately, Tim was to leave the club around one week later.

During the year, your Committee members have spoken on our behalf on BBC Cov & Warks, and have now become involved in the Sky Blues “Fans Forum” initiative – giving us a direct voice to the senior management of the club.

The final “icing on the cake” came at the last home game against Wolves where we broke our record for attendees on a day, taking 115 to the game. In total, we’ve taken 5,683 fans to games at the Ricoh now, which is a fantastic testament to the support we have here in Kenilworth. After the game we were able to enjoy a drink and refreshments at the Tiltyard, and to look forward to next year. The whole committee wanted to put on record their thanks for the fantastic support you’ve all given over the year – Chairman and founder, Jim Arnold said “thanks to the loyalty of CCFC Kenilworth Supporters, through thick and thin, we’ve now firmly established a consistent service for all supporters in the area from what was originally started three years ago. We are now averaging over 70 supporters for every game, and that figure is rising constantly. This support means an awful lot in terms of assuring our future ability to run the service, and hopefully, to ensure that the voice of CCFC Kenilworth Supporters is heard by the club; many thanks to all our regulars, and also to the growing band of new supporters who have joined us during the year”.

We will still meet during the close season on Mondays at 19.00 in the Tiltyard, and will as ever welcome anyone who wants to come and join us. We will be making arrangements for next year, and naturally will be trying to contain costs consistent with providing a reliable service – as soon as we have any information, we’ll post it on the website. We will also be continuing to liaise with the club – especially through the forum – and will willingly consider any issues or ideas that members wish to put forward.

Have a really good summer, see you all next season

5000 Day
We had a great day at the Ricoh when Coventry City thank us for taking 5,000 fans

5000

CCFC Kenilworth Supporters have reached a major milestone in their history as they have now taken over 5,000 Kenilworth fans to see their beloved team play at the Ricoh Arena. The club were pleased to recognise this with the presentation of a commemorative certificate by “Kenilworth Kid” Tim Flowers prior to the home game against Barnsley.

The group formed in 2005, when the Club relocated from Highfield Road to the Ricoh Arena - the purpose being to offer a simple and cost-effective way for Kenilworth based supporters to the Sky Blues. Right from the first game at The Arena, they have organised Coach travel for each home game, and some away games, also supporting local schools by assisting with getting the next generation of Sky Blue Fans “on the right road” with coaches. Those who travel range from young to old, and from solo to family groups, all are welcomed.

Chairman Jim Arnold was the initial driving force behind the idea, and has been joined by Committee members Harry Bragginton, Dave and Nigel Smith and Jim Seaton. Coaches leave from Abbey End and “The Tiltyard” Pub in Leyes Lane for every home game and can be booked online at the website www.ccfc-kenilworth-supporters.co.uk or by phone to Dave or Nigel on (01926) 855977.

The Committee would particularly like to thank Catterall’s of Southam, who have provided great flexibility on numbers and sizes of coaches required, and The Tiltyard Pub, who not only are one of their start/drop-off points, but who also provide the venue for the regular Monday 7.00pm Meetings (all welcome). Both have been instrumental in helping reach this fantastic achievement.

5000 DAY

I am sure you would all like to join me on thanking Jim Seaton for sorting out the great day, which was enjoyed by us all.

I know Jim put a lot of time and effort (and worried a lot) to make it happen, and it turned out to be a great day for CCFC Kenilworth Supporters

Cheers Jim top job

the committee

The committee (above) would like to thank all that have used the coach to get to the Ricoh, it is all of you that have made it possible to reach this milestone.
